Personal attacks on Obama from the right wing

While driving from Texas to Michigan recently, I have been able to listen to some of the talk radio and I have been shocked and discouraged to hear all the irrational invective from the right- wing talk show hosts against the Obama administration.

As far as I can tell, the Obama administration has been blindsided by the collapse of the economy, and is trying to deal with it in as pragmatic a fashion as they can. They haven’t been dogmatic. In fact, in the last week, they have supported the same stand in regards to polar bears as the Bush administration. They seem to be as misguided as most people in regards to the carbon dioxide-global warming issue, but most people are confused about that, not just the Obama administration.

But the radio hosts are irrationally strident in their invective against the Obama administration, and against President Obama personally. Way, way, way out of proportion to any actions already taken, or any that have been talked about. And there is the whole “anti-christ” feeling they get across. I’m chagrined and Puzzled. Could it really be racism?

How sad. Let’s hope and pray that they step back from the irrational invective and see the advisability of some tolerance and reasonable consideration. This is our President. Let us hope and pray he succeeds in making this a better world.

I don’t get it either. I was an Obama supporter for reasons that have played themselves out- I thought he could look at issues for the most part rationally and figure something out with a bit of sense to it. And on this point I have not been disappointed- While I might disagree to some of the things he’s done, (I’m not entirely thrilled by the … Read Moreextent of some of these bail outs, and I’m still unsure of what’s going on in Afghanistan), I think he’s been doing a respectable job and has not done anything rashly or for the pure politics of a situation.

I don’t know if it’s racism- I’ve never seen similar attitudes toward Colin Powell (though we may soon) or Rice, or other high profile black leaders. Is it racisim? Is it the rise of evangelical dominionism combined with leftover fears of communisim? Is it a handful of power-drunk people with bad withdrawal symptoms that happen to be really good at fear mongering? Is it the money that fear mongering on talk radio brings in?

On the part of Dick Cheney, I think he is following the ancient dictum that a good offense is the best defense. He is aware that he could become legally on the hook for much of the malfeasance of the Bush administration.
But why the invective is focused personally on Obama, when the discussion really needs to be on the merits of the issues, is beyond me unless it’s racism.

I would point out to these people, that one of the commandments states unequivocally that: Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
